  • Are sunglasses necessary after cataract surgery?

I will have cataract surgery next week. Do I really need to wear sunglasses after cataract surgery?

  • #2
Yes, I think sunglasses are absolutely necessary. What I want to tell you is, intensive care after the operation is very important for the recovery. Cataract surgery is common, many surgeon can do it successfully. But there are still some patients don't have an ideal surgical outcome. Why? They have most probably ignored the care during those fragile times, when the eyes are much more sensitive to the environment. Sunglasses are necessary. You should shorten your time staying outdoors as possible as you can and don't risk the strong UV. When at home, please also pay attention to some details. Don't wash your head by yourself, you can go to saloon, lay down and keep your eyes from water. Don't sleep on the side which the one eye is operated. Don't carry child or do heavy works. Don't bend over to pick something. Don't watch TV too long. Don't eat nuts and chili, banana and papaya are recommended. I wish you a speedy recovery.

It's said that it is better for you to wear sunglasses after cataract surgery because you may feel sensitive to lights after the surgery. Sunglasses may help you to prevent radiation, UV coating and allay the lights. It is good for your eyes' recovery. And after the surgery, you may pay attention to the following points: do not press or rub your eyes; do not lift heavy things; avoid letting shampoo or water into your eyes for the first week after the surgery; try to avoid bright lights. Generally speaking, your eyes will take 2-4 weeks to heal up from the operation.

It is up to you. As far as i know, some people will wear sunglasses after cataract surgery because they are sensitive to light. If you one of them that sensitive to light after cataract surgery, sunglasses will be necessary outfit. If you are not sensitive to light and have normal vision, you may not wear sunglasses. Of course, you still can wear sunglasses in intensive sunshine or somewhere.

Yes, it is better for you to wear sunglasses after cataract surgery because you may be sensitive to lights after that and bright light may bother your eyes. The surgery center may provide you with a ''temporary'' pair of sunglasses to protect your eyes for your drive home. However, these sunglasses do not offer the advanced protection you will now need on a daily basis to keep your eyes healthy. So it is better for you to prepare a pair of good quality sunglasses in advance.
