Sitting too close to the television (or computer, for that matter) may not cause permanent eye damage, but it definitely can cause eyestrain (as many office workers can tell you after a long day staring at their computer screens).Symptoms of eyestrain include headache, watery eyes, itching or burning eyes, light sensitivity, and blurry vision.

While spending too much time staring at a TV screen can tire the eyes, there's no evidence to show that it causes permanent damage. As with every other activity, moderation is the key. If your eyes start to burn or feel strained, close your eyes for a couple of minutes to rest them. If that doesn't work, turn off the TV and give your eyes a longer break

Of course, excessive TV viewing can cause health problems indirectly. A person who sit close to the TV and consistently watch TV more than four hours a day are more likely to be overweight, which in and of itself can bring about health problems later. Sitting close to the television may not make a person nearsighted, but you may sit close to the television because you may be nearsighted and undiagnosed. If you habitually sit too close to the television for comfort, get your eyes tested as soon as you can.
