    Does insurance cover refractive surgery?

  • #2
Unfortunately, most insurance companies do not cover vision correction procedures, including LASIK and other refractive surgery procedures. However, because policies vary it's best to consult with your policy or insurance provider to see if refractive surgery is covered. Some employee programs cover a percentage of certain vision correction procedures, and some private and supplemental insurance plans also offer some coverage for refractive surgery. If vision correction surgical procedures are not covered by your insurance, Silverstein Eye Centers is pleased to offer a number of financing options, including monthly payment plans via CareCredit and Chase Healthcare.

Insurance usually does not cover the cost of refractive or laser eye surgery, but some companies will pay the bill under certain criteria. Because laser eye surgery is usually an elective surgery, insurance companies consider it cosmetic and not medically necessary. However, under certain conditions, medical insurance plans will cover refractive or laser eye surgery. These include: Eye surgery for refractive errors that are a result of an injury. Eye surgery for refractive errors that are a result of surgery. Eye surgery for severe refractive errors. However, there is no standard level of impairment at which insurance will cover correction. Insurance coverage under these circumstances is generally very inconsistent and individuals should check with their provider. Eye surgery when a patient is not only unable to wear glasses due physical limitation but cannot wear contacts due to physical limitation.

LASIK surgery is one of the most popular surgeries out there for people who suffer from refractive errors, reducing the dependence on corrective lenses for those who suffer from myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism. In the vast majority of cases, health insurance providers will not cover LASIK surgery. That said, it's always important to double check with your health care provider before stopping by our laser vision correction centers. Policies do vary, and while rare, it's not out of the question for LASIK surgery to be covered.
